Buikstra is from Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change. July 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm, Dr. Buikstra will present “Venerated Ancestors: Mummies of the Ancient Andes.” From the famous Chinchorro mummies — the earliest prepared mummies in the world — to those from the later Inka, learn what they have taught us about their civilizations and what they can teach us about our own. Call to Order: The business meeting of the Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) was called to order at 6:32 p.m. at the Missouri Historical Museum (MHM) by Greg Paulus, MCAS President. Greg welcomed everyone to the June meeting of MCAS. Minutes: Correction: Under item 3) of announcements, $40.00 was donated to Missouri Archaeology Society for Missouri Archaeology Month and $40.00 to the Powell Archaeological Research Center. Joe Harl motioned and Richard Wall seconded to wave the reading of the minutes of the May meeting and approve them as amended. Motion carried. Treasury: Carol Baluka, MCAS Treasurer reported treasury balance of $2,171.99. Total membership is 97. Announcements: 1) Earl Fey announced that Archaeology Day at Cahokia Mounds will be held Saturday, August 25. To fund Archaeology Day, they are publishing a booklet with names and a brief biography of the exhibitors and selling advertisements in the back of the booklet. Earl Fey motioned that Mound City purchase a 1/2 page ad for $50.00 to sponsor the event. Don Raiche seconded the motion. Motion carried. Earl would also like everyone to bring the addresses of their interested friends for mailing. For more information on this event, e-mail archearl@msn.com. 2) The Tri-Society picnic was attended by 20 people and MCAS owes $20.00 to our host. 3) The deadline has passed to schedule any activities on the Archaeology Month poster. 4) Blake Mound repair day is scheduled for Sunday July 15, 2007, from 8-11am in Chesterfield. If you would like to help undo a century of looting and neglect at St. Louis County’s largest remaining prehistoric mound, contact Greg Paulus at bgpaulus@archaeologist.com or (314) 704-3507. 5) The Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Society will meet on the Third Tuesday of every Month at 7 pm at the Pershing School library in University City. Membership is $18.73, which is also the year the farmhouse was constructed. Excavations are scheduled to take place on June 23, 2007 at 8:00-11am. Call 704-3507 for information. Old Business: 1) The Center for American Archeology at Kampsville, Illinois is reinstating Archeology Day on June 23, 2007.
