Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) Meeting Minutes; Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Prepared by Janet Kneller, Secretary Call to Order: The business meeting of the Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) was called to order at 6:37 p.m. at the Missouri Historical Museum (MHM) by Greg Paulus, MCAS President. Greg welcomed everyone to the May meeting of MCAS. Guest Speaker June 5, 2007 at 7:00 pm “The Search for Amelia Earhart: New Evidence in a 70-year-old Mystery”, guest speaker archaeologist Jennings Bunn, Jr. will be discussing recent research and evidence to explain what really happened to Amelia Earhart. Minutes: Larry Kinsella motioned and Carol Baluka seconded to wave the reading of the minutes of the April meeting and approve them as written. Motion carried. Treasury: Carol Baluka, MCAS Treasurer reported a treasury balance of $2,117.99. MCAS has a total membership of 105. Announcements: 1) John Kelly announced that Powell Archaeological Research Center (PARC) is having a Clean-Up Day Sunday May 6, 2007 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. 2) May 6, 2007 at 2:00 pm 40th Annual Mushroom Fry at Kinsella’s. Bring a dish to pass. 3) MCAS won 3 place, $80.00 from Trivia Night. Earl Fey motioned and Alice Fugate rd seconded that the $80.00 be donated to Archaeology Month. Motion carried. Greg Paulus donated the $30.00 he received for giving a talk to MCAS. 4) May 14, 2007 Three Rivers Archaeological Society Meeting at Mastodon State Park. 5) The Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Society will meet on May 15, 2007 at 7 pm at the Pershing School library in University City. Membership is $18.73, which is also the year the farmhouse was constructed. Excavations are scheduled to begin on May 26, 2007 at 8:00 am. 6) May 16 - 20, 2007 26th Annual Fort Osage Knap-In, Booneville, MO. I-70 exit 111. 7) Three summer field schools will take place at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The University of Missouri, St. Louis for 3 weeks from May 21-June 8, 2007 under the direction of Dr. Lucretia S. Kelly. Washington University for 6 weeks from June 4-July 13, 2007 under the direction of Dr. John E. Kelly. ) 8 Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville 8 weeks from June 11-August 3, 2007 under the direction of Dr. Mary Vermillion. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site: May 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm Storytelling Program- 26th Annual St. Louis Storytelling Festival. May 17, 2007 at 7:30 pm Cahokia Archaeological Society Meeting. May 19, 2007 from 10:00 am to 12 noon Basic Finger Weaving Workshop, Chevron Weave Workshop 12:30-3:30 pm. $20.00 for each or $35.00 for both, all material are provided. May 20, 2007 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm Kids Day for all ages, flintknapping, pottery making, Indian games, spear throwing, Indian Dance, food, and refreshments. May 26, 2007 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm Nature/Culture Hike, a 3 mile hike accompanied by an archaeologist and a naturalist to explain the various areas. May 16, 2007 at 6:30 pm and May 19, 2007 at 1:00 pm “It Takes Two: Family Oral History”, a workshop with Dr. John Wolford. $30.00 per person, $25.00 for MHS members, and $20.00 for genealogy series card holders. Westfall’s own experiences living with the Lindberg family. At 2:30 pm, Ken Blackburn, world record holder of longest paper airplane flight, participate in paper plane construction and contest. At noon to 4:00 pm “Static F-4 Phantom Fighter Display” on the MHM front lawn. Old Business: 1) Greg Paulus is continuing to solicit ideas for Archaeology Month in September. 2) The Center for American Archaeology at Kampsville, Illinois is reinstating Archaeology Days on June 23, 2007. Anyone interested in attending Kampsville Archaeology Days on a bus day trip, contact Greg Paulus at bgpaulus@archaeologist.com or at 314-704-3507. The cost will be $65.00 and includes lunch and a stop at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. 3) On April 21, 36 people under the guidance of Mark Leach partially restored Blake’s Mound by moving 6 pallets of soil into looter holes. Six pallets is approximately 14,000 lbs. Guest Speaker: Larry Kinsella; “I Busted My Axe And This Is All I Have To Show For It” . Larry Kinsella discussed the manufacture, the debitage results, and the utilization of his big mother ax.
