Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) Meeting Minutes; Tuesday, April 3, 2007 Prepared by Janet Kneller, Secretary Call to Order: The business meeting of the Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) was called to order at 6:40 p.m. at the Missouri Historical Museum (MHM) by Greg Paulus, MCAS President. Greg welcomed everyone to the April meeting of MCAS. Minutes: Allen Banks motioned and John Kelly seconded to wave the reading of the minutes of the March meeting and approve them as written. Motion carried. Treasury: Judy Horton read the treasurers report for Carol Baluka, MCAS Treasurer and reported a treasury balance of $2,202.14. MCAS has a total membership of 105. Announcements: 1) Joseph Abell’s Missouri artifacts have been donated to the Missouri Valley College for an artifact type collection. Anyone interested in volunteering to help organize the collection, please contact Valerie Altizer or Timothy Baumann at 660-831-4674, valtizer@utk.edu and baumannt@moval.edu. Joseph Abell’s Illinois artifacts have been donated to Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. 2) Powell Archaeological Research Center (PARC) and the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society are hosting the second Annual Trivia Night fund raiser at Cahokia Mounds from 7-9 pm, April 14, 2007. Several tables are left for teams or individuals. The cost is $10.00 per person for tables of 8-10 people. First place wins $150.00, 2nd place $100.00, and 3rd place $80.00. There will also be a silent auction. Bring your own snacks and drinks (soda, beer,wine). 4) John Kelly announced that PARC, in cooperation with the Archaeological Conservancy, has purchased some land in back of Powell Mound and is in the process of acquiring additional lots. 5) Three summer field schools will take place at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The University of Missouri, St. Louis for 3 weeks from May 21-June 8, 2007 under the direction of Dr. Lucretia S. Kelly. Washington University for 6 weeks from June 4-July 13, 2007 under the direction of Dr. John E. Kelly. Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville 8 weeks from June 11-August 3, 2007 under the direction of Dr. Mary Vermillion. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site will be open everday of the week starting April )6 28, 2007. Cahokia Archaeological Society meeting at 7:30 pm, April 19, 2007. Finger weaving workshop instructed by Susan Wilson at 10 am-1 pm, April 21, 2007. Raptor Awareness Day: sponsored by the World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis at 2:30 pm, April 21, 2007. Cherokee Art Show: 9 am-5 pm, April 28, 9 am-4 pm, April 29, 2007. 7). June 2, 2007 is set for the CAS, Three Rivers and MCAS spring picnic at Pleasant Ridge Park taking place to coincide with Devil’s Hole 27th Annual Knap-In. 8). Ongoing exhibitions at the Missouri History Museum are: “Drawing Upon Stone; John Caspar Wild’s Early Views of the Midwest” until May 6, 2007. The Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Society will meet on April 17, 2007 at 7pm at the Pershing School library in University City. Membership is $18.73, which is also the year the farmhouse was constructed. 10). Greg Paulus is now soliciting ideas for Archaeology Month in September. 11). The Center for American Archaeology at Kampsville, Illinois is reinstating Archaeology Days on June 23, 2007. Greg suggested that MCAS sponsor a field trip to Kampsville. 13). Joe Harl will be giving a presentation at the Missouri History Conference in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Louis at 10:30 am-noon on April 20, 2007. 14). April 20, 2007 is the IAAA/Beloit College Conference at Beloit, WI. 15). Annual meeting of the Old Mines Area Society will meet across from Washington State Park at the French Area, April 21 & 22, 2007. 16). May 1st guest speaker will be Larry Kinsella, Experimental Archaeologist, presenting “Bustin My Ax”. Old Business: 1) MAS meeting at the Resort of Port Arrow Head in the Lake of the Ozarks was well attended by 125 persons representing 12 chapters. Guest speaker, Patricia J. O’Brien gave a delightful presentation on “Asa: tatkitaruc, Horse Chips on the Hill, A Lost Pawnee Animal Lodge”. 2) The MAS poster constructed by Aimee Burkhardt-Cook received 3rd place. MAS has created a new student membership for $8.00 per year. Some of Joseph Abell’s books and journals sold at the silent auction raised approximately $650.00, which go toward funding Missouri Archaeology Month. Printing and poster material costs paid by Greg Paulus were $186.83. Allen Banks motioned and Jim Duncan seconded that Greg Paulus be reimbursed the $186.83 for poster expenses. Due to an unexpected delay in the delivery of the books, those attendees that signed up for an autographed copy will receive a signed copy at a later date.
