Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) Meeting Minutes; Tuesday, March 6, 2007 Prepared by Janet Kneller, Secretary Call to Order: The business meeting of the Mound City Archaeological Society (MCAS) was called to order at 6:36 p.m. at the Missouri Historical Museum (MHM) by Greg Paulus, MCAS President. Greg welcomed everyone to the March meeting of MCAS. Minutes: Carol Diaz-Granados motioned and Don Raiche seconded to wave the reading of the minutes of the February meeting and approve them as written. Motion passed. Treasury: Carol Baluka, MCAS Treasurer, reported a treasury balance of $2,053.54 and all expenses for the Christmas Party were paid in full. MCAS has a total membership of 110. Announcements: 1) March 7, 2007 at 7pm Joe Harl will be giving a lecture class at the Florissant Valley Community College on “Urban Archaeology”. Tuition for the class is $4.00. Joe Harl will also be presenting the “Results of the St. Ferdinand Investigations”, March 31, 2007 at the MAS Meeting. 2) March 7, 2007, 9am - noon is a Teacher’s Workshop for hands on experience at Cahokia Mounds. March 15, 2007 at 6:30pm the Cahokia Archaeological Society will meet at the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. At 7:30pm Cary Geiger will speak on “Archaeological Evidence of Pre-Clovis Man in Allendale County South Carolina: Excavations at the Topper Site”. March 18, 2007 at 6:45 am everyone is invited to the Spring Equinox Sunrise Observation. Meet at the reconstructed Woodhenge for an explanation of function and form. April 1, 2007, at 2 pm Dr. Jeffrey Mitchem will give a lecture on “Parkin Mounds: Mississippians and Desoto in Northeast Arkansas”. 3) The Three Rivers Chapter of the Missouri Archaeology Society will meet on March 12, 2007 at 7pm at Mastodon State Historic Site. Mark Leach will be the guest speaker. 4) The Setter-Meyer Farmhouse Society will meet on March 20, 2007 at 7pm at the Flynn Park School library . Membership is $18.73, which is also the year the farmhouse was constructed. 5) Ongoing exhibitions at the Missouri History Museum are: “American Visions of Liberty & Freedom” until March 11, 2007. “Shifting Gears; The Automobile Industry in St. Louis, 1890-1930" until April 1, 2007. “Drawing Upon Stone; John Caspar Wild’s Early Views of the Midwest” until May 6, 2007 Other Events: March 11, 2007 at 2pm Quilting 101. March 13, Noon to 1:00pm “Half the People”, 20th century women’s rights. March 13, 2007 at 7:00 pm “America at a Crossroads: Operation Homecoming”, a film premier. March 27, 2007 at 7pm, “Re-sparking the Past: Old Cars Come to Life” presentation and book signing by Gerald Perchbacher. March 29, 2007 at 7:00pm “Reproductive Rights: A Legal History”. April 1, 2007 at 2:00pm “The Automobile Industry in St. Louis” by Jim Schild author and publisher of “The Auto Review”. 6) The annual Missouri Archaeological Society (MAS) meeting will take place on March 30-April 1, 2007 at the Resort of Port Arrow Head in the Lake of the Ozarks. The meetings include an evening banquet and guest speaker Patricia J. O’Brein, MAS Lecture 2007, Kansas State University. Ms. O’Brien’s topic is “Asa:tatkitaruc, Horse Chips on the Hill, A Lost Pawnee Animal Lodge”. An Archaeology Month Fund has been set up in honor of Joesph Abell. Some of Mr. Abell’s books and journals will contribute to the silent auction at the MAS meeting in order to support this fund. 7). June 2, 2007 at 2:22pm is set for the CAS, Three Rivers and MCAS spring picnic at Pleasant Ridge Park. 8). April 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm Robert Mazrim will be the MCAS guest speaker, discussing lifestyles of people of the frontier, “The Sangamon Frontier”. Old Business: 1) Aimee Burkhardt-Cook at 636-978-1799 or e-mail at greeniz68@aol.com is constructing the poster for the MAS meeting and needs your assistance to provide pictures for the poster. 2) Anyone interested in helping Mark Leach with the restoration of Blake’s Mound some time in April, please contact Greg. Attendance: 37 Meeting was adjourned at 8:56 p.m. and reconvened upstairs, at the gift shop for Dr. Erhardt’s book signing of “European Metals in Native Hands; Rethinking Technological Change 16401683".
